Thank you for your interest in adopting a Secondhand Mutt! Because we are a 100% volunteer- run organization, our process for finalizing the adoption could take up to a week before you can take a dog home. We know our dogs inside and out and require potential adopters to complete the Adoption Application in advance of visiting our dogs.
Click on the 'Adoption Application' button below to access our online application. Be sure to continue reading the information on this page to learn all about our adoption process.
FUNDING & ADOPTION FEES Our adoption fees start at $250. The average cost to provide basic healthcare and spay/neuter surgery for a dog exceeds $200. The dogs are also fed 3-5 meals per day in addition to boarding and fostering expenses. In nearly all cases, our adoption fee never covers the actual cost of caring for each dog in our program. In some cases we lower the fees. This may happen when a dog has been returned and we have already collected a fee or if the dog has been in our program for a very long time. Like most rescue organizations, we operate on a shoestring budget and the costs to shelter, vaccinate, spay/neuter and feed our dogs exceeds the final adoption fee. We count on public and private donations with big thanks or we couldn’t continue our mission. If you would like to make a charitable donation you can do so online through Paypal or send a check to: Secondhand Mutts, 2603 Scranton Road, Cleveland, OH 44113. For each donation we receive we will provide an acknowledgement and tax-deduction receipt.
ADOPT-A-MUTT To be considered for one of our dogs we require a completed adoption application including up to three personal references. Once the application is completed we will review it and determine if the dog you are interested in will be a match for your household. You will hear from once we have received your application. Once we determine you are a suitable candidate for adopting one of our dogs we will contact you to set up a meet-n-greet so you have a chance to meet any of the dogs in our program you like. Should you decide after meeting a dog that you would like to move forward to adopt we will contact your references.
We rely on volunteers for everything we do, therefore our visiting hours are by appointment only to make sure we have a representative available to assist you. After meeting the dog(s) you can then let us know if you want to proceed with the application process to adopt the dog. We do not hold dogs or give first come first serve privileges. We will contact you regardless of your application being approved or not approved. Our goal is to find the best possible match for our dogs, and the decision process is not always easy for our adoption committee. The process will continue as follows:
Our volunteers will check your veterinary and personal references and follow up with you if there are any unanswered questions or concerns. This can take a few days, but can move quickly if you notify your personal references that we will be calling. Please be patient and refrain from calling or emailing us for at least a week.
After references are checked, we will contact you to let you know the status of your application.
If your application is approved, we will set up an adoption time that allows you to spend as much time as possible with your new dog after taking him or her home. Typically adoptions are finalized on Fridays or Saturdays, but exceptions are made.
When you pick up your dog, you will be asked to sign a contract and pay the adoption fee in cash or check payable to Secondhand Mutts. We will provide you with your dog’s medical records along with other informative printed materials.
If you do not see a dog on our current list of adoptable dogs on our site we encourage you to check back often.
