WE NEED A HOME!
The following dogs are in need of a forever and in some cases foster home. All of our dogs are social with other dogs and spend their days playing with lots of furry friends at The Mutt Hutt daycare for dogs. In most cases we have foster homes so our dogs get real-life experience to make it easier for their transition to their forever home. Our staff of volunteers know the dogs behavior and personalities inside and out and can answer all of your questions with honesty and integrity.
If you are interested in adoption one of our dogs please read about the process on our adoption information page of this website.

"Banjo" |
Banjo is a youngster who was transferred for rescue from the Richland County Animal Shelter in Mansfield, Ohio. She arrived at the shelter on New Years Eve, patiently waiting for her family to claim her and nobody arrived. She's been at the shelter for a month, was evaluated to come into our program and was transferred north to us to find her forever home.
Banjo is a 5 month old Australian Shepherd Mix. She is black, white and grey in color and we expect she will stay medium in size. She is up to date and will be spayed prior to her adoption.
We are currently seeking a foster home for Banjo so we can get to know her better. She is a youngster so he will need a lot of exercise and learn how to be crate trained.
We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.

"Trombone" |
Trombone...what a face she has! She was picked up as a stray in Richland County on 1/17/12 and waited for her owners to come claim her. Nobody showed up so she was then available for adoption or transfer. We called the shelter to find out which dogs needed help and who would fit into our program and Trombone was a staff favorite. Trombone is a black and tan Coonhound girl who is about four years old. She is not spayed yet but will be prior to her adoption. She is up to date on shots.
Trombone will be introduced to the pack this week and then we will update the listing to reflect who she is once we get to know her better. She appears to have had a home given her size (she could lose a little weight) and she knows some basic commands. Stay tuned!
We are currently seeking a foster home for Trombone so we can get to know her better. She appears to have had a home and is a sweetheart so we'd love for her to have even a temporary place to call home.

"Diego" |
Welcome Diego to our pack! He is a little guy who we suspect is a Miniature Australia Shepherd mix. He has no tail and has the qualities of an "Aussie". He arrived from the city kennel as a stray and needed to be moved to rescue so we were glad to take him in. We will post more information in the coming weeks as we get to know him but given his age, cuteness and size we don't imagine he'll be with us long. He will be neutered prior to his adoption.
We are currently seeking a foster home for Diego so we can get to know him better. He is a youngster so he will need a lot of exercise and learn how to be crate trained.

"Hobo Harold"

HEARTWORM POSTIVE
|
HOBO HAROLD IS IN A FOSTER HOME
Hobo Harold was a stray taken to the local shelter to be transported to another rescue in hopes of finding a home. He passed all the tests to get admitted into the Cleveland APL but tested positive for heart worm so he was turned away. Harold is a very cute boy. We are not concerned with helping dogs with medical problems and raise money through fundraisers to take care of their medical bills. We will be having our 3rd Annual Benefit Scrambles Memorial Pancake Barkfeast on January 28th to raise money and awareness for heart worm positive dogs. Currently, we have two dogs in our program that are receiving heart worm treatment and they need us to find them a home.
Harold is about 3 years old. He has very cute markings -- black, apricot and brown cow spots all over his body. He seems very much like a Labrador Retriever and his markings are like a collie. We suspect is is a lab mix of some sort. He is very happy go lucky, loves other dogs and is doing well in daycare. He is not neutered yet because he will need to get heart worm treatment first to ensure he is healthy to handle the surgery. For now we are seeking a foster home for Harold to recover in after he starts treatment. If you are interested in fostering please contact us.
We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperame0nt tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. "Daisy" |
DAISY IS IN A FOSTER HOME
Daisy is a senior Bassett Hound. She is 14 years old and currently in a foster home. She was surrendered to us by her owners after they moved and Daisy couldn't do the steps at the new house. Luckily for Daisy we have a very special foster mom that tends to senior dogs and she had availability to take Daisy in. Here is a full report of how she is doing at home:
- Daisy loves to go for a walk everyday. She walks pretty slow and a walk around the block is about all she can handle, but it is something she really looks forward to. She will hop and waddle real fast when she sees me get her leash out.
- Daisy has accidents once in awhile. Mostly poop. Additionally she does not like 'the elements' - rain, snow, etc., so she will try to avoid going outside if it isn't decent out.
- Daisy loves all other animals - she will wag her tail when one of the dogs or cats walk past her. She is definitely more of a 'dog dog', rather than a 'people dog'. Daisy likes to follow the other dogs around when possible. She will sometimes seek out affection, but she isn't big on cuddling with people. She would do best in a home with multiple docile animals.
- She has been around children and does absolutely fine.
- Daisy takes her mealtime very seriously. If I do not feed her at 5, she does everything she can to get my attention. She's an old lady that likes schedules and routines.
- I put a heated throw on her bed and she looooves it.
- Been taking joint medication daily. She eats it like a treat.
- Her teeth are not in great shape - that is to be expected with her age. She is very sensitive about me looking at her teeth and she seems to have an easier time eating if I put a little bit of hot water & honest kitchen dehyrdated mixed together on her kibble.
- Sight and hearing are very limited, again her age is a major factor. She does not hear me come home and I usually have to pet her to wake her to go out. Her smell is fantastic though and she can manuever her way around a one story home very well.
- She can go down the two stair to go outside, but not up, however, she has recently started using the ramp. I got a harness that goes around her butt and has a handle that can assist her with getting up steps too.
- Daisy knows some commands. Will sit and wait for treats. Starting to take the treats more gently.

"Sergio"
|
SERGIO IS IN A FOSTER HOME
Sergio was rescued from the Ashtabula APL. This shelter, located east of Cleveland, is overrun with strays and they are forced to network them to avoid dogs being euthanized. We were very happy that we had the space to take in four and save their lives. Sergio is up to date on shots and neutered. He is scheduled to go into a foster home and once he does we will update the website and provide more information about him. Sergio does love other dogs and is really enjoying his new pack of friends. He is a year old Labrador Retriever mix.

|
Bob Evans arrived from the City of Cleveland Kennel. He was found as a stray with a horrible skin condition. Despite the pain he must be in he is a very happy-go-lucky boy with plenty of love to give. We suspect his prior owner didn't want to deal with the skin issue and set him free but we'll never really ever know his history. As soon as we picked him up we took him to Dr. Abby at Gateway Animal Clinic for shots and to have his skin scraped. He is diagnosed with Demodectic mange. Bob Evans is approximately 10 months old, a male, black and tan Doberman Pinscher. Bob Evans is housebroken and crate trained.
Demodectic mange in dogs is caused by a sensitivity to and overpopulation of Demodex canis if the animal's immune system is unable to keep the mites under control. There are two types of demodectic mange: localized and generalized. Localized consists of 4 spots or less. Bob Evans has generalized mange. Most dogs are immune to demodectic mange, however dogs with compromised immune systems and the elderly are at a higher risk. It is not contagious to humans. Dogs affected with demodectic mange do not need to be isolated from other dogs. Demodectic mange is generally only contagious from mother to pup during suckling. Demodectic mange is not contagious after weaning. Many puppies will grow out of demodectic mange as their immune systems mature. Demodectic mange can recur if the immune system is compromised such as after steroid treatment or other immune-compromising illness. Treatment with ivermectin is often prescribed by vets along with skin scrapings. Ivermectin is often continued until two negative skin scrapings are achieved. We are currently treating Bob with medicine and antibiotics and baths. We suspect it will take at least 6 months for his skin to heal and hair to grow back, it could be up to a year.
Regardless of how he looks he is a fantastic dog that loves other dogs, humans, little dogs and loves to play and be loved. He will be a great addition to any family. We will be holding a cornhole tournament fundraiser in September called "Cornhole for the Critters" to raise awareness about Demodetic Mange and funds to cover his expenses and future mange case dogs in our program. Bob Evans is up to date on shots, heartworm tested negative and he is neutered.
UPDATE (9/15/2011): Bob's skin is looking terrific! All of the bald spots on his back and neck and chest are filling in with fur and still growing. He looks like a different dog and should be on medicine for about 2 more months. We are now working on getting him to gain some weight as he has lost some since he's been with us. We found out he could have hip dyspasia and will most likely need surgery in the future.

"Blueberry"

HEARTWORM POSTIVE
|
BLUEBERRY IS IN A FOSTER HOME
Blueberry, oh Blueberry. This sweet, small Doberman girl has had a rough start to life. She was abandoned with two other Dobes in White House Court, Ohio at a residence of a dog trainer. The other two dogs were placed through networking but Blueberry was the lone straggler. Through Facebook networking we picked up her story and talked to her caretaker about our adoption program and she was grateful to let her come to Cleveland to find a place to call home.
Blueberry is only 45 pounds -- we are thinking she must be the "Worlds Smallest Doberman" but she is a dobe through and through. She has typcial velcro tendencies, a great personality and is quite mellow. She is four years old, blue and rust in color and very submissive. We took Blueberry to the vet for her shots and found out she is heartworm positive. We can't have her spayed until we can get her treated for heartworm which will happen sometime in January. To raise the money for her treatment she will be the beneficiary of our "Pancake Barkfeast" on January 28th -- we will be serving buttermilk and blueberry pancakes in her honor.
Blueberry will require a quiet home or foster home while being treated for heartworm. She will need very little exercise, minimal walks and lots of love for about two months. Once she is healthy and her heart is in good order she can be spayed. We will also have one of her teeth extracted as she has one that needs to be removed due to some trauma and decay. Blueberry is good with other dogs and cats. She is not really playful and would probably love a home that is low key and if there is a dog in the home an older dog.

"Earl Grey"
|
Earl Gray arrived from the county kennel. He was there for about 3 weeks and had started to disengage and stop eating. He was pretty wasted away down to skin and bones when we picked him up for rescue. He is about 2 years old but acts more like a puppy. He is a fawn male with a docked tail and docked ears. He is up to date on shots and neutered.
Earl loves people and other dogs. He would be an excellent family pet for an active family as most Dobermans need a lot of exercise. He is crate trainable and has spent some time in one with no issues. He does tend to like pillows a little too much but we are hoping that will go away once he recovers from his neuter surgery.
We are currently seeking a foster home for Earl Grey so we can get to know him better. He does like other dogs and is doing well in a daycare environment with a full pack of dogs. He will need a lot of exercise as we suspect he was not given enough with his prior owners and has energy to burn. A fenced in yard is a plus for this boy!
